Alex has a
broad range of sustainable tourism development and
capacity building consulting experience, both in the
U.S. and overseas. He specializes in collaborative
strategy development that integrates strong economic
analysis with effective public-private partnerships that
enhance the economic competitiveness of tourism clusters
in lasting and measurable ways. He facilitates
stakeholder meetings to mobilize leadership and broker
compromise in addressing long-standing economic
constraints and to reorient public sector service
offerings to meet the needs of the private sector. He
also specializes in SME business advisory services aimed
at upgrading tourism value chains and improving SMEs’
access to new export markets.
Over the last several years Alex has worked on tourism
development projects in: Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia
region; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Chile; Argentina;
Guyana; Peru; Bolivia; Costa Rica; Guatemala; and
Belize. These projects typically focus on the
sustainability and competitiveness of emerging tourism
clusters, but he has also been engaged as a consultant
on non-tourism projects including a trade expansion
project in Ethiopia, and a public-private collaborative
effort to shape a long-term economic strategy for
Oakland, California. He acquired his knowledge of
international business competitiveness through five
years of progressive and diversified sales and marketing
experience, including two years with a U.S.-based
outbound travel firm focused on Latin America. He earned
his Masters degree from the University of California San
Diego’s Graduate School of International Relations and
Pacific Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political
Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder. In
addition to his native English, he speaks Spanish
