Garret is a social
entrepreneur whose heritage—family run hotels in Ireland—and
recent professional experience—creative diplomacy and sustainable
development—have prepared him for his current work as Managing Director
with La Paz Group, responsible for project development and direction
as a senior partner in the company. He earned degrees in Geography &
Philosophy, as well as Environmental Management, both from University
College Dublin. He has worked in Ireland, Republic of South Africa,
Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, FYR Macedonia and Kosovo.
He is a gifted communicator, fund-raiser and charismatic leader of
large teams from diverse backgrounds working on multi-million dollar
development projects.
For the last decade he has worked for the United Nations in the Balkans
developing innovative multi-country sustainable tourism programs, promoting
UNESCO vis a vis the World Heritage Sites in the region, and implementing
sustainable tourism development strategies at the country level.
Garret developed and funded a "world first" ecologically progressive building to serve as the home for the UN organizations operating in Montenegro, which is expected to go on site in 2009.
He is an expert in the political and institutional aspects of
Sustainable Development, specializing in social entrepreneurship programs.
In addition to his native English, he speaks Croatian/Bosnian/Serbian/Montenegrin.
A frequent guest speaker at WTO, UNESCO and UNEP conferences in the region of South
East Europe, Garret lives in and works from Sarajevo, Bosnia.
